Telescope Program with Tom Snydertelescope

Former science educator Tom Snyder will teach a class on Thursday, December 12 at 6:30 pm on how to use the two new telescopes the library owns in its Library of Things. Attendees will learn how to set up the telescopes, adjust them, and use them to get closer to our celestial neighbors. We will then head outside with the telescopes to get a look at the full moon, weather permitting. All ages welcome.



Used Book Swapbook swap

Looking for a good book? Come to the Used Book Swap at the library! Wrap up a gently used/nearly new book and mark it with a general statement of what it is – novel, romance, picture book, biography, etc. Bring your gift wrapped book to the library and exchange it for another. Everyone who participates will receive a bookmark and be entered into a drawing for a prize.  All ages welcome. The Used Book Swap is open all hours the library is open between December13-23.



National Cocoa Day Celebration hot cocoa

This time of year many people crave the sweet, dark, creamy beverage known as hot cocoa and this food day is a perfect occasion to indulge yourself! Stop by the library anytime on Friday, December 13 to sample our hot cocoa bar (the library is open from 9:00am-5:00 pm). Join us at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm if you want to learn how to make all natural, homemade, instant hot cocoa.



S.T.E.A.M. Fun Fridays with Microscopes Microscope

All ages welcome. Join us Friday, December 13 from 3:30-5:00 pm as we test out the Library’s new microscope. Feel free to bring items with you that you want to explore with the microscope.



 

Teen Craft--Gingerbread HousesGingerbread house kit

Teens are invited to join us at the library on Saturday, December 14 at 2:00 pm for the chance to build their own gingerbread house. The library will provide all the supplies, just bring yourself and your friends! For those age 13-18. Registration is requested so we can ensure there are enough supplies.

 


Strings Club Christmas Celebration music notes

 The JKPL Strings Club welcomes an audience on Monday, December 16 at 6:00 pm for this special Christmas themed jam session.  Bring your instrument and join the fun, or just come and listen.  Refreshments provided.


 

 Create Your Own Board Gameboard game_generic

Join us on Saturday, December 21 at 11:00 am for a make-your-own board game session! Participants will be able to create their own trivia based board game featuring their own family. Not interested in this kind of game?  Come use the provided supplies and your creativity to make your own game. This program is for adults, families or those age 10 and older.  Younger participants are welcome with an older companion.

Read-Along Books

The James Kennedy Public Library is excited to announce that a new collection of books for children and families is ready to check out.  Thanks to a grant from the Dubuque Racing Association and support from the Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library, the JKPL has purchased a start-up collection of children’s read-along books that come with an audiobook built right in. You can read the book or have the book read to you as you follow along. The JKPL collection will start out with over 100 titles and they are ready to check out right now!

 Layette Quilt Display and Raffle end December 15

Several quilts made by the Dyersville Layette Ladies are on display at the library.  During this time you can purchase raffle tickets to win the quilt of your choice! Cost for raffle tickets are 1 for $2.00, 3 for $5.00 or 10 for $10.00.  One winner will be able to select their favorite quilt out of those on display to keep. The winner of the raffle will be drawn on Monday, December 16. Need not be present to win. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be split evenly between the Layette Ladies group and the JKPL.
