Registration Begins for Fall Story Time and Wee ReadOwls reading

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to sign up their preschoolers for the Fall 2016 sessions of Preschool Story Time and Wee Read. Story Time is open to 3, 4 and 5 year olds who have not been in Kindergarten and will be offered on Wednesdays at 9:30 am or 6:00 pm. Wee Read is for children under 3 and their caregiver and will be offered on Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Programs will run September 7 through November 16. Registration is required as space is limited.  Registration begins August 15.

Nerf WarNerf war

Bring your Nerf gun and ammo and head to the library on Saturday, August 27 from 6:00-8:00 pm for this bi-monthly Nerf War! Participants must be 13 or older and anyone under 18 must have a signed  parental waiver. Registration requested - 10 people required to hold the program but a max of 20 is allowed.  Walk-ins welcome if space allows. Participants must provide their own Nerf guns and ammo but no modifications to darts or guns to increase range or hitting power will be allowed. Date changed for this month

Come Learn a New Language @ Your Library

Recently, the library added Mango Languages and Little Pim as two new online language-learning services for our library users of all ages. There are over 60 languages available for adults to learn in Mango and 10 languages for kids in Little Pim.  Both services can be accessed directly from the library’s website or with an app on your smartphone or tablet.  All you need is your JKPL library card and you can access the service from anywhere you have internet access.  Stop by anytime between 4:00-8:00 pm on August 29, 30 & 31 and learn more about these programs and see them in use.  All ages welcome. All who stop by will get a free Mango promo item to take home!


Adult Summer Reading Program Continues through August 31

Everyone 18 and older is encouraged to participate in the 2016 Adult Summer Reading Program. Registration begins on June 1 and adults are welcome to join at any time during the summer.  The program runs June 1 through August 31 with the theme Exercise your Mind - Read!  Join us as we explore ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy through fitness, nutrition, stress relief, and READING!  Visit our Summer Reading Program page for more information about all three of our Summer Reading Programs.  Submit your book reviews here or pick up paper copies at the library.

Open Mic Night Open Mic Night

The James Kennedy Public Library is hosting a monthly open mic night at local restaurant Brew & Brew on Friday, September 2 at 6:00 pm. Performers are encouraged to sign up for ten minute time slots and show off their talents. Poetry, music, readings and comedy are just a few examples! All ages are welcome to come and watch, but performers are limited to age 13 and up. Performers can register in advance at either the Library or Brew & Brew with walk-in performances allowed if there is time. Tables for spectators can be reserved by calling Brew & Brew.

Back to School Pajama Party

School aged kids and their families are invited to put on jammies and come to the library on Wednesday, September 7 at 7pm to Yo Vikings!hear the Western Dubuque High School Drama Club perform a theatrical reading from their fall play Yo! Vikings.  This is the lively tale of spunky, imaginative Emma Katz. When Emma is assigned Erik the Red for her World Discovery Day report, she begins to channel her inner Viking, setting off on a real adventure and changing her community for the better.  Cookies and milk will follow the performance, then families can head home and dream of their own Viking adventures!
