Summer Reading Programs for all agesBuild a better world logo_teen

The summer reading program theme this year for all ages is Build a Better World! All programs offer incentives to read and use the  library. Many special events and activities will be offered. Please visit our Summer Reading Program page for information on all three programs.  The adult program runs throug August 31. The Children and Teen programs run through July 29. 


Build a Better World - Dyersville Scavenger Huntscavenger hunt

Do you know there are special and unusual buildings in your community? Look around! During the month of June, the JKPL encourages you to look for these special landmark buildings and locations.  Pick up a form at the library showing various locations in Dyersville or print one out. Identify all of the locations and turn it in at the library before July 1.  Everyone who correctly identifies all of the buildings will have their name entered into a drawing for a JKPL goodie bag which includes a Love My Library yard sign, coloring book, wine glasses, and the opportunity to have a book adopted in your name at the library. This program is part of the adult summer reading program but teens are welcome to participate.

Come and meet some of your fellow teen Star Wars fans at the library on Friday, June 30 from 6:00-10:00 pm! Come learn how to make your own lightsaber, eat some Star Wars themed food, play Star Wars trivia and watch both Rogue One and Episode 4: A New Hope. For those that have completed 6th-12th grade only.

Build a Better World – Toys for the Needytoys in cardboard box

Miriam Eick, organizer of the Dyersville Toys for the Needy Project will be at the library on Saturday, July 1 at 10:00 am to share information on this volunteer project that provides items needed by community members throughout the year but especially at Christmas.  Come and learn why she started this project  20+ years ago, how it has changed over time, and how it continues to assist the Dyersville area community.

Build a Better World with Recyclingrecycling truck

Join Bev Wagner from the Dubuque Metropolitan Solid Waste Agency on Thursday, July 6 at 10:00 am and learn what we can all do to reduce the trash going into the landfill.  Through hands on  activities, participants will go home with at least one thing that they can do to make the world a better place. At the end of the program, everyone will be able to visit a recycling truck in the library parking lot and see it up close. All ages welcome.

 Coloring for AdultsCrayons

Come relax and relieve stress by coloring on Thursday, July 6 from 5:00-8:00 pm.  Coloring for Adults is offered monthly at various times and days. The library provides coloring sheets, colored pencils and light refreshments. No registration needed. Participants are welcome to come and go during the program. This program is open to adults 18 and older.  

Lunch with Author Linda McCannCivilian Conservation Corps in NE Iowa bookLinda McCann

Author Linda McCann will be at the library on Saturday, July 8 at 12:30 pm to discuss her newest book, Civilian Conservation Corps in Northeast Iowa. Feel free to bring your brown bag lunch to enjoy as you listen to this fascinating author of several titles published by The Iowan, including Prohibition in Eastern Iowa. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Video Game Afternoongame controller

Come to the library on Saturday, July 8 from 2:00-4:00 pm for an afternoon of video games! The library will have it’s new Wii U gaming system set up in the Hoffman Room along with the Wii and Xbox 360 for everyone to come and get their game on! All ages welcome. Refreshments provided.

Toy & Food DriveBuild a Better World - Christmas in July

Why wait until December to support your local charities? Get a head start by donating new toys to the Toys for the Needy Project and non-perishable food items to The Dyersville Food Pantry all throughout the month of July. Please drop off your items at the library during open hours.

The JKPL will be an open host site providing free meals for children age 18 and under during the summer break from school. 

  •  There are no income guidelines, all children welcome!

  • Meals will be served from 11:30 to 12:00 noon every weekday from June 5 thru August 18 except July 4. 
  • Adults may purchase a meal for $4.00  if sufficient quantities are available. 
  • Families are encouraged to contact the library at 563-875-8912  with questions or to indicate interest in participating.
  • Advanced reservations are NOT required.  Programs and activities for children may be offered before or after the meals.
