Let’s Go Build a Kitekite

The James Kennedy Public Library is hosting a kite making event on Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 am so families can learn about saving and Ben Franklin’s entrepreneurial skills. Kids and families will assemble and decorate their kites at the library, while learning how to save money. Intended for ages kindergarten through  5th grade and their families.  Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances.

Social Security: Fact and Fictionsocial security card

Join us Saturday, April 22 at 2:00 pm for this program that will present correct, unbiased information about how Social Security works, the various components of Social Security, options for claiming strategies to match the goal of not outliving one's resources in retirement and other critical questions.  Presented by Susan Taylor, Human Sciences Specialist, Family Finance, from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.  All ages are welcome.  Refreshments provided. Open Mic Night Open Mic Night

The James Kennedy Public Library is hosting a monthly open mic night at local restaurant Brew & Brew on Monday, April 24 at 6:00 pm. Performers are encouraged to sign up for ten minute time slots and show off their talents. Poetry, music, readings and comedy are just a few examples! All ages are welcome to come and watch, but performers are limited to age 13 and up unless they have an adult companion. Performers can register in advance at either the Library or Brew & Brew with walk-in performances allowed if there is time. Tables for spectators can be reserved by calling Brew & Brew.

Imposter ScamsScam alert

The JKPL will stream this presentation and discussion on imposter scams on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:00 pm. Included will be information on the grandparent scam, the IRS scam, MidAmerican scam and more.  The Iowa Attorney General will be leading this program that is sponsored by the Iowa AARP.  Everyone is welcome to attend this free Money Smart Week program.  Refreshments will be provided. Money Smart Week Kids READ EventOne Hen

The JKPL is partnering with DuTrac Community Credit Union to present this special family READ event on Thursday, April 27 at 6:30 pm.  Join us as a representative  from DuTrac reads the picture book One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference written by Kate Smith Milway.  There will also be other information and activities about money appropriate for elementary school students and their families.  The first 20 attendees will receive a copy of the book to keep. Participants should be in kindergarten through  5th grade.  Registration is encouraged but not required, refreshments provided. Children's Day/Book Day Mama Panyas Pancakes bookChildren's Day/Book Day

Children's Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día), is a celebration of children, families, and reading that is  held annually and emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for every child regardless of linguistic and cultural background. This year the JKPL will celebrate with a family story time on Saturday, April 29 at 10:00 am.  We will read the book Mama Panya’s Pancakes  by Mary and Rich Chamberlain. After the story, we will make and eat the pancakes in the story. There will be a drawing for a mbira (African thumb piano) for someone to take home. All ages welcome, but children under age 6 need an adult companion.  


Ladies Spring TeaTea set

Bring your mother, sister, aunt, daughter or neighbor lady to the annual Ladies Spring Tea on Sunday, April 30 from 2:00-3:30 pm. Come and enjoy delicious tea, scrumptious tea sandwiches and delicate homemade cookies served on real china. Lemonade will be provided for the non-tea drinkers. All ages welcome but children under the age of 10 require an adult companion. Sponsored by the Senior Advisory Committee.



Beer & wineWine & Beer Tasting Fundraiser

Join us at Brew & Brew in downtown Dyersville from 5:00 to 8:00 pm for wine and beer tasting from area wineries and breweries. Vendors include O So Good Winery, PromiseLand Winery, Stone Cliff Winery, Franklin Street Brewing Company, Matthews Distributing, and 7G Distributing. Tickets are $20.00 in advance or at the door.  Tickets are available at the library or Brew & Brew. Tickets include a commemorative glass, the tasting event, and appetizers. Door prizes and a 50/50 raffle are also part of this fun event!

Yard Sign Fundraiser

To celebrate National Library Week, April 9-15, and raise money to support the library’s services and collections, the James Kennedy Public Library is selling yard signs that say “I Love My Library” during the month of April.  Signs are 18” x 24”, vinyl, reusable, come with a ground stake and are $10.00 each.  Already have one of these signs? Now’s the time to put it up.  Put a sign in your yard and let everyone know you love the library!
