Register NOW for summer sessions of Story Time and Wee Read

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to sign up their preschoolers for the Summer 2016 sessions of Preschool Story Time and Wee Read. Story Time is open to 3, 4 and 5 year olds who have not been in Kindergarten and will be offered on Wednesdays at 9:30 am or 6:00 pm and Fridays at 9:30 am. Wee Read is for children under 3 and their caregiver and will be offered on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 am. Programs will run June 8 through July 29. Registration is required as space is limited.  Registration begins May 16.  

Building Creativity One Block at a Time: a LEGO® program  

Join us Thursday, May 26 from 5:00-7:00 pm for this month's LEGO® program.  This month’s theme is "Sports". This program is for all ages but children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult or older partner. This LEGO ®  program is part of a monthly LEGO® building block program at the library sponsored by DuTrac Community Credit Union. Each month there is  a theme to help inspire creativity.  Photos of the creations are displayed in the children’s area of the library and the actual creations are displayed at DuTrac for two weeks after each program.  All children who participate have their name entered into a quarterly drawing for a special LEGO® related prize provided by DuTrac.  Refreshments provided.


Sunday, May 29 through Monday, May 30:  Library Closed for Memorial Day







 “Exercise Your Mind - Read!” Mini-Book Club!  The library us offering a special book club series for teens and adults to talk about selected books on the topic of health and fitness.  Meeting dates are Tuesdays, June 21, July 19, and August 16 at 6:00 pm. The first book to be discussed is The Good News About What's Bad for You; the Bad News About What's Good for You by Jeff Wilser.  This book debunks popular misconceptions about common vices and healthy habits, sharing reassurance about vices in moderation and strict health-maintenance routines while offering real-world facts on such subjects as coffee, supplements and procrastination. Copies of the books will available to check out from the library 3 or 4 weeks before the discussion date.  Refreshments provided.  Registration is encouraged by not required. All participants will have their name entered into a drawing to win a copy of the books read for this series.

Relax @ Your Library!   Join us on Wednesday, June 1, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm for this special event kicking off the start of the 2016 Adult Summer Reading program, Exercise your Mind - Read.  Stop in at the library to sign up for the program and learn a little bit more about how you can relax and refresh at your library.  Try your hand at coloring for adults, working on a puzzle, playing games, and exercising with a console game.   Interested in knowing more about walking and wellness?  Ellyse Salter from Anytime Fitness will be on hand to talk to guests about walking, wellness, and health.  Come for all four hours, just to sign up for the Summer Reading  Program, or anything in between.  Refreshments provided.

Walk This Way walking club begins!  As part of the 2016 Adult Summer Reading program, the JKPL is organizing an adult summer walking club. Sign up anytime throughout the summer and get healthier by walking.  Sign up to walk in a group, find a walking buddy, or walk on your own.  The important thing is to just get walking! Sign up between June 1 and 7 and receive a free 7-day trial at Anytime Fitness and have your name entered into a drawing to win a free one-month membership. The first 25 participants will receive a simple pedometer to help them track their steps.  All ages are welcome to participate in this program but only adults are eligible to receive prizes.  

Adult Summer Reading Program Begins June 1

Everyone 18 and older is encouraged to participate in the 2016 Adult Summer Reading Program. Registration begins on June 1 and adults are welcome to join at any time during the summer.  The program runs June 1 through August 31 with the theme Exercise your Mind - Read!  Join us as we explore ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy through fitness, nutrition, stress relief, and READING!  Visit our Summer Reading Program page for more information about all three of our Summer Reading Programs.  


Teen Summer Reading Program Begins June 6

Students who have completed 6th-12th grades are invited to participate in the 2016 Summer Reading Program which run June 6-July 30. The theme this year is Get In The Game - Read!  Registration begins May 31 on-line or June 6 in-person. The program has been revamped this year so visit our Summer Reading Program page for more information and to learn about all three of our Summer Reading Programs. 


Children's Summer Reading Program Begins June 6

Children ages PreK through 5th grade are invited to participate in the 2016 Summer Reading Program which runs June 6 through July 30.  The theme this year is On Your Mark, Get Set...Read!  Registration begins May 31 on-line or June 6 in-person.  Visit our Summer Reading Program page for more information about all three of our Summer Reading Programs.

Family Get-Away FundraiserFamily Get-Away Fundraiser

Want to get away this summer?  Buy 1 ticket for $5.00 or 5 tickets for $20.00 for your chance to win a fun family getaway for four! Participants will pick which of several different local or overnight trips they would like their raffle ticket(s) to go toward. Destinations include Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark in Dubuque, Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, King's Pointe Waterpark Resort in Storm Lake, Lost Island Waterpark in Waterloo, and tickets to Adventureland Amusement Park in Altoona.  Each destination will include certificates for 4 slices of pizza, 4 cookies, & 4 donuts donated by Casey’s to help make the drive go faster.  Contact the library for more details on what you can win. Tickets on sale May 1-June 10. The drawing will be held after 8:00 pm at the June 10 Downtown Friday Night.  All proceeds will go to support library services and collections.

The James Kennedy Public Library Board of Trustees is seeking candidates to serve on the Library Board, effective July 1, 2016.  Information about the powers and responsibilities of the Library Board are available at the library or on the library website on the About tab www.dyersville.lib.ia.us/library-information.   Applications are available at both the library and city hall.
