Today's literary fiction doesn't have giant white whales, little twisting Olivers or pride (and prejudice, for that matter). But that's the stigma it faces thanks to its occasionally boring predecessors. Come join us on the third Thursday of each month as Matt Muilenburg, a former English instructor at Wichita State University and the current editor of the Commercial, shows you all the excitement, violence, sexuality and general awesomeness that today's writers exhibit in their work.
The current topic is "The Middle Children:" under-appreciated novels by award-winning authors that don't receive the due they deserve. There are no James Pattersons, JK Rowlings or Stephanie Meyers on this list. Just novelists who put popular fiction wordsmiths to shame. The book for this month is The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. Books will be available to check out from the library and refreshments will be provided. Registration is requested to ensure enough copies are ordered.
