Ghosts, Zombies, and Dragons - Oh My!
newspaper article for the Dyersville Commercial
Love horror movies, but can’t sucker anyone into watching them with you? Are you the type to make a “head’s up” joke after decapitating a zombie? If so there might just be a group of like minded people for you! That group would be the Paranormal Book and Movie Club at the James Kennedy Public Library. This group consists of the type of people that discuss critical thinking concepts such as the “survivor girl” in slasher films yet still laughs when the airhead meets her maker prematurely! Topics covered in this club include ghosts, vampires, zombies, science fiction, and horror.
The Paranormal Book and Move Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month @ 6:00 pm. The first meeting of the month is generally a book discussion with copies of the books available at the library to check out and read prior to the meeting. At the second meeting, a movie is shown and then a discussion follows. Some of the books and movies that are planned for the future are an episode of the TV show Supernatural for March 22; World War Z by Max Brooks and Resident Evil for April; Amityville Horror by Jay Anson and Paranormal Activity 3 for May, and Storm Front by Jim Butcher and Underworld for June. Teens and adults are welcome to participate, but be aware that most of the content read and viewed in this club is not for the easily bothered or squeamish. Registration is requested.
Another group started at the JKPL this month is the Dungeons and Dragons Players group. Dungeons and Dragons is a table top role playing game where players come together to accomplish a goal: complete a quest, find a treasure, save the princess, give a troll the characteristics of your boss and then wipe it off the face of the earth, or save a village from zombies. Often, it can be difficult to assemble a group for role playing games, which makes this a golden opportunity for people who are interested in this game to get together every month to learn more about the game and teach others how to play. We play the 4th edition of the game and all ages and skill levels are welcome. If you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you! The goal of this group is to make this monthly game night as fun as possible and to host a friendly environment for playing. The D & D Group meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 pm. Walk-ins are encouraged.
