UPDATES TO LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY by Dawn Schrandt

Do you use Facebook?  Did you know that the library does?  While the library has had a Facebook page for some time we have just recently started to use it consistently.  Just as you use Facebook to communicate with your friends and family we use it to communicate with you, our patrons.  We now post upcoming events, notification of closures, and other news we think the patrons want or need to know on our Facebook page.  And just like your friends Facebook pages, you can post comments on ours too.  Let us know how we’re doing!  So look us up on Facebook under James Kennedy Public Library, “Like” us, and you too can get our updates delivered right to your Facebook page so you can keep current on what’s going on at the library.

Our Facebook page isn’t the only thing that has been under construction lately.  Our website has also been undergoing some major changes.  Our Home page now highlights upcoming special events and classes and you can check the News tab for all news relating to the library.  The Upcoming Events calendar is updated as we finalize each event so you can always look ahead and see what is planned in the upcoming weeks.  Under the About Our Library tab we’ve added information about our staff along with all the library polices.  Under the Use Our Library tab you’ll find information about the cost of making copies, the cost to send and receive faxes, how to use a library computer, reserve a meeting room, and how to obtain a library card.  The Books and Reading tab has been updated with all kinds of sources for how to find your next book to read and how you can make a difference by participating in our Adopt-a-Book program.  The Do Research tab has various links to sources about health, news, newspapers, and entertainment.  We’ve even updated the tabs for Adults, Seniors, Teens, and Kids so you can see what services and programs we offer and what events are going on that you won’t want to miss!

We also have free wireless access in the library so you can bring your own laptop or handheld device and get on the internet if you don’t want to use one of our computers.  Did you know that many (but not all) of the links on the website can be accessed from your home?  You can even search the library catalog from home and if you find the book or DVD you want you can place a hold it right from the comfort of your own home!  If you want to be able to access your library account from home stop by the circulation desk at the library and we can set up a login and password for you.  So check out all the website has to offer and enjoy!
