Money Smart Week Kids READ EventOne Hen

The JKPL is partnering with DuTrac Community Credit Union to present this special family READ event on Thursday, April 27 at 6:30 pm.  Join us as a representative  from DuTrac reads the picture book One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference written by Kate Smith Milway.  There will also be other information and activities about money appropriate for elementary school students and their families.  The first 20 attendees will receive a copy of the book to keep. Participants should be in kindergarten through  5th grade.  Registration is encouraged but not required, refreshments provided. Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances.


Children's Day/Book Day Mama Panyas Pancakes bookChildren's Day/Book Day

Children's Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día), is a celebration of children, families, and reading that is  held annually and emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for every child regardless of linguistic and cultural background. This year the JKPL will celebrate with a family story time on Saturday, April 29 at 10:00 am.  We will read the book Mama Panya’s Pancakes  by Mary and Rich Chamberlain. After the story, we will make and eat the pancakes in the story. There will be a drawing for a mbira (African thumb piano) for someone to take home. All ages welcome, but children under age 6 need an adult companion.  

 

Ladies Spring TeaTea set

Bring your mother, sister, aunt, daughter or neighbor lady to the annual Ladies Spring Tea on Sunday, April 30 from 2:00-3:30 pm. Come and enjoy delicious tea, scrumptious tea sandwiches and delicate homemade cookies served on real china. Lemonade will be provided for the non-tea drinkers. All ages welcome but children under the age of 10 require an adult companion. Sponsored by the Senior Advisory Committee.

 

Children’s Book Week Family Story Time /1000 Books Before Kindergarten Awards CeremonyChildren's Book Week

Join us Wednesday, May 3 at 6:30 pm as we celebrate Children’s Book Week by reading some amazing brand new picture books. After the stories, there will be a brief awards ceremony for children who have reached reading goals in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Cookies and lemonade will round out this fun family event. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is funded by a grant from the Dubuque Racing Association and the Friends of the Library. 


Broken Brain, Fortified Faith with author Virginia PillarsBroken Brain, Fortified Faith

Virginia Pillars is a popular NAMI speaker and advocate for an adult daughter who was diagnosed with a mental illness. Join us Saturday, May 6 at 10:00 am she she shares snippets of her family’s journey as well as important research and developments in the study and treatment of mental illness.  Copies of her book, Broken Brain, Fortified Faith will be available for purchase from the author. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library in support of May as Mental Health Awareness month.



Building Creativity One Block at a Time: a LEGO® programLegos with DuTrac

Join us Sunday, May 7 from 1:30-3:30 pm for our monthly LEGO® program.  This month’s theme is "Disney Adventure". This program is for all ages but children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult or older partner. This LEGO® program is part of a monthly LEGO® building block program at the library sponsored by DuTrac Community Credit Union.

 


JKPL Memoir ProjectWhat's your story sign

Everyone has a story to tell, what's yours? Join us Monday, May 15 at 6:00 pm for this monthly writer’s group that focuses on writing about personal stories and family history, even when that story is told in poetry form. This group meets the third Monday of each month. Suggested topics to write about may be discussed. Participants are invited but not required to share their writing and new members are welcome to join at any time.

Plant sale


Plant Sale Fundraiser

Join us Saturday, May 20 from 8:00-10:00 am, in the city parking lot next to the library, to select and purchase plants and flowers donated by committee and community members.  All proceeds will be used to support library collections and services. If you have plants you would like to donate, please contact the library by May 18 to make arrangements to bring them in. Plants of all kinds, including indoor plants, are welcome.

Yard Sign Fundraiser

During April & May, the James Kennedy Public Library is selling yard signs that say “I Love My Library”. Signs are 18” x 24”, vinyl, reusable, come with a ground stake and are $10.00 each.  Already have one of these signs? Now’s the time to put it up.  Put a sign in your yard and let everyone know you love the library!
